Congratulations, Chief Bratten

On June 1st, 2009 Chief Robert K. Bratten celebrated 50 years of service to the State of Texas as a Peace Officer.  To mark this significant achievement, members of the UTHSCSA PD surprised him with a plaque during the department’s monthly birthday celebrations where members of the department are also recognized for outstanding performance.  Those in attendance included his wife (they are also celebrating 50 years of marriage this year), son, daughter, and granddaughters, along with other members of the UTHSCSA community. James D. Kazen, Executive Vice President for Facility Planning and Administration, was on hand as well and remarked, “I was pleased to join the commissioned officers, guards and staff in honoring Chief Robert Bratten for 50 years of continuous service as a police officer – a milestone rarely attained, and one that has benefited our University community for the past 31 years.”

Chief Bratten’s long and distinguished career began on June 1st, 1959 when he was hired as a sworn Police Officer with the El Paso, TX Police Department.  Over his 13 years of service to the El Paso PD, he held many specialty positions, including Motorcycle Officer and Undercover Narcotics Detective, until he left to become an Inspector with the Office of Director of Police, University of Texas System Police on March 6th, 1972.

Chief Bratten assumed duties as the Chief of Police at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Police Department (UTHSCSA PD) August 12th, 1978. In 2008, Chief Bratten achieved an important landmark - the UTHSCSA PD attained “Accreditation” through the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA), and “Recognition” through the Texas Police Chief’s Association, typically reserved for municipal law enforcement agencies.  The UTHSCSA PD is not only the first campus law enforcement agency to receive this “Recognition” status, but also the first to be Accredited and Recognized simultaneously.

In addition, the Office of the Director of Police joins UT Health Science Center at San Antonio and its proud Police Department in recognizing and congratulating Chief Bratten in reaching this rare milestone.  Director John Slettebo has had the distinct pleasure and privilege of knowing and working with Chief Bratten since October 1972.

Chief Bratten’s distinguished career includes serving in various elected offices of the Texas Police Chief’s Association, International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, Texas Association of Campus and University Police Administrators, and advisor to the UT System Police Academy and numerous other organizations.
